Well September hasnt got off to the start I was hoping for. My scheduled 19 mile marathon training run got off to a good start and things were going well until about 7 miles in when I developed a pain in my right knee. Despite numerous stops to stretch, which worked for a little while, i took the sensible decision to cut short the run. Its not something ive ever had to do so i am a little disappointed. However, the marathon is still 5 weeks away and i still have a 20 mile to do, so time to get myself back in shape. This will be my third year running what is billed as ‘Britains most beautiful’ marathon and I certainly agree with that statement, the scenery changes round every twist and turn and it keeps you motivated when the going gets tough!
On a brighter note, September has got some very exciting opportunities in store. Next week is the Middlesbrough 10K which i have ran in for the last 3 years. I will see how the knee is over the next few days after a sports massage and decide at the last minute whether to run or not. I will be there regardless cheering on my son, Will, who is doing the 3k fun run for the first time and my husband, Pete, who is doing the 10K for the first time.
The weekend after the 10K sees the iconic Great North Run, the worlds largest half marathon. Im not running it but i am volunteering for Parkinsons UK to help support their charity runners, by offering massage after they have completed the 13.1 miles. Its a great way to get involved in world famous event and help out a fantastic cause at the same time.
As a member of the Sports Massage Association, i am committed to continued professional development (CPD). So with this in mind i will be popping down to Middlesbrough College next week to enrol for a further qualification in Sports Massage. I am keen to learn further skills which will enhance my practice with the ultimate aim of helping people. I am also signed up for a CPD course later in the month which will focus on Lower Back Pain. This is very common problem these days with a majority of us sat using computers for extended periods of time and something I have experienced myself having had a desk job for many years. I have been told to dress in comfortable clothing that i can exercise in and that we will be doing some core work. I cant wait to pass on my new knowledge to my clients but be warned it might be painful! In a good way of course.
So a lot to fit in between massaging and marathon training but some great opportunities which i cant wait to get stuck in to.
